Walmart to Discontinue Sale of Guns in New Mexico due to the New Law of Background Check

CBS News reported that Walmart has firmly decided to stop selling guns at its New Mexico stores very soon from later this month. The retailer took this crucial decision immediately after the state passed a new law which reads as expanding background checks that has got into effect from July 1.

According to the outlet, with effect from July 22, Walmart will stop selling guns in New Mexico but will continue the practice of selling ammunitions at the store. The store will either transfer or sell off the stock of any firearms left after July 22 to their locations in the other states.

As per the new legislation henceforth a new background check will be conducted for private-party transfers. As per the law, Walmart will require people to register guns which include handguns or assault rifles that they had bought from somewhere else and which the retail store is not selling at their Mexico outlet. However there are handguns being sold at their outlet in Alaska.

It was long back in 2015 when the company stopped selling AR-15 rifles and other semi-automatic weapons due to sluggish demand.

A spokesperson of Walmart informed CBS that the company took this vital decision because several of their store associates do not have the expertise in handling assault rifles or handguns. He further added that this new arrangement might upset their customers when they see the guns unexpectedly.

In addition to this, Tiffany Wilson, director of communications at Walmart, in his statement to CBS News remarked that “Walmart will no longer sell firearms in their New Mexico stores. They will be surrendering their license of federal firearms.”

Dick’s Sporting Goods and The Coraopolis, Pennsylvania-based chain are few other giants in the ammunitions category who have announced in the past about their drastic decision to stop selling guns in the market.
