What is Powder metallurgy and why is it important to localise metal powder production in India?

The scientific process involved in the production of ferrous and non ferrous metal powders as well as creating metal components out of the metal powders is called Powder Metallurgy. These metal components are a big part of our daily lives and can be found in industrial products, household appliances and most importantly in cars and bikes.

The question of why it is important to localise metal powder production in India arises because India is one of the leaders in terms of automotive production across the globe and consumes about 1.35 lakh tonnes of metal powder every year but due to the lack of indigenous factories, the country has to heavily rely on importing metal powders from counties like China which is much more expensive.

Involute Metal Powders also known as IMPT is a pioneer in the research of metal power manufacturing and has developed numerous patented techniques to make metal powder production cost effective and environmentally beneficial. Two of their major discoveries include the two stage reduction of iron mill scales and the latest one being the use of magnetite for makin sponge iron powders.

Involute metal powders have played a significant role is establishing and setting copper and bronze powder plants. Their indigenous patented technology also has the vastness of production of sponge iron powders used for autocomponents, welding rods, friction materials and sintered bushes.

The advancements made by IMPT aim to create a a boost in local metal powder production and to encourage more start ups and businesses to join in on this venture as part of the Make In India campaign.
