Infatuated: Firas Rahi’s Passion for Beirut

The Lebanese capital Beirut has endured untold trials and tribulations, including war and economic devastation, yet it remains a city of determinate spirit, proud history, and rich cultural output. Its breathtaking beauty has long been renowned. One artist particularly moved by the city’s allure is Firas Rahi, whose most recent series of paintings, Infatuated, stands as a testament to the incredible women of Beirut.

Rahi’s paintings act as a manifestation of the city’s spirit and the profound longing and affection that its residents feel for it, despite the longstanding chaos and instability that have come to define many aspects of life in Beirut. Through his art, Rahi seeks to express admiration for the fortitude and empowerment of the city’s women, who embody its fierce independence and colorful sense of individuality. The collection features realistic depictions of women simply living in a space marred with memories of the city, electing to long for Beirut from a place of hope and positivity rather than sorrow.

The Infatuated series came to life in the Henry Museum in Batroun, a household characterized by traditional Lebanese design, where it garnered substantial attention. The museum was specially designed to showcase the artifacts from Beirut, both before and after the catastrophic August 4 explosion. Each painting was titled after a song by the iconic Lebanese singer Fairouz, adding to the air of emotion rooted in Lebanese culture. The collection emerged in part from a collaborative effort between Rahi and Luma Rabah, the proprietor of Mojo Art Gallery, where Rahi’s first solo exhibition took place, with Rabah assisting to bring the initial concept to fruition.

The vivid hues Rahi employed in the paintings elevate the mood of the individual pieces and serve to lift the spirits of those viewing them. The collection became especially appealing to the many expatriates who yearn for Beirut from distant reaches, reminding them of the unconditional, albeit troubled, love they retain for the city. Rahi’s work is renowned for conveying positive messages; this series is no exception.

Infatuated endures as a tribute to the magnificent character of Beirut, as well as an impactful reminder of the deep sense of affection its people feel for the city. Despite facing adversity and difficulties, Beirut continues to inspire and evoke strong emotions, which Firas Rahi has so effectively captured in this series. Through his art, he has brought the world a glimpse of the city that inspired much of his own creative journey.
