Noah Gear: My process evolves according to the specific project requirements. It generally starts with conceptual inspiration, followed by sketches, mock-ups, renders, technical drawings, and finally, production. However, I adapt this process based on the unique needs of each endeavor. Some projects demand in-depth research before design concepts, while others involve specific stages depending on the client’s needs.
Q: Many artists experience moments of creative block during their projects. How do you deal with such obstacles, and do you have any strategies for staying motivated and inspired?
Noah Gear: When facing creative blocks, I remind myself to trust my initial instincts. Creative stagnation usually comes from overthinking. To regain inspiration, I seek balance and simplicity.
Q: What is the most crucial step in the process of designing any given project?
Noah Gear: The most important part of every project are the details and execution. I’ve discovered that even modest concepts can be transformed into stunning creations through careful planning and production.
Q: This past spring you took part in producing a luxury Jewelry pop-up entitled ‘Poetry of Time’. How did you approach the concept and execution for this project?
Noah Gear: ‘Poetry of Time’ presented an extraordinary opportunity. From the initial meetings with the client, it was clear this project would be an artistic masterpiece. While exciting, we were well aware that its intricate complexity would bring challenges along the way. We seamlessly combined modern fabrication with antique design in the heavily adorned pop-up. The highlight was the harmonious blend of elements we produced in house with traditional French craftsmanship to create a truly breathtaking exhibit.
Q: The ‘Poetry of Time’ project has garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative and distinctive elements. Can you elaborate on the challenges you encountered during its creation and how you overcame them?
Noah Gear: This project was like solving an intricate puzzle—25 unique wooden trees, 25 organically shaped treetops, over 1600 distinct glass leaves, 27 ceiling sections, 40 stage decks, 114 wall panels, 10 jewelry showcases, 20 hand woven tapestries, and more. Precision and leadership were critical during production and installation. Team collaboration was vital, with frequent adjustments required. Staging the pop-up in our production facility beforehand saved a lot of headaches on site, but still there were many times during our installation when we had to huddle as a team and reassess our methodology for assembling in order to reach our goal.
Q: How do you maintain your artistic integrity while considering audience expectations or feedback?
Noah Gear: While my personal design style may not suit every client, my concrete design skills will always align with their projects. I infuse my creativity into subtle details rather than imposing my unique style. This approach ensures harmony between my work and the brand’s identity.
Q: Your projects seem to convey specific themes or messages. Could you share insights into the storytelling aspect of your work and how you use art to communicate ideas?
Noah Gear: Storytelling is one of the main elements in our larger pop-up exhibitions. Understanding a brand’s message is crucial for delivering the desired impact and creating the right customer experience. In my studio work, stories inspire my creations—translating narratives into material and form.
Q: How does experimentation factor into your creative process, and how do you decide which concepts to explore further?
Noah Gear: Experimentation is my preferred approach. I exhaust various concepts to explore possibilities before narrowing down to logical choices; different variations are tested to refine the final concept. Between projects, I research new materials, workflows, and methods to build a reference for proposing solutions to future challenges.
Q: Your diverse projects showcase various styles and techniques. Did the ‘Poetry of Time’ project introduce any new artistic approaches or mediums?
Noah Gear: Handling unique hand-woven Parisian tapestries was a novel experience. Stretching them on wooden frames posed challenges, especially with oversized pieces that couldn’t be cut. Being creative with folding techniques was essential to preserving the artwork. Dealing with the glass leaves was more familiar due to my experience with glassblowing; but it was still insightful, particularly the process of mechanically fastening them to a structural frame.

Noah Gear: Tailor your process to suit you. Test it on various projects to ensure its effectiveness. Flexibility is key—don’t hesitate to refine your approach based on specific project demands.
