In December of 2019, after several appearances in Manhattan Federal Court, rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine received a 2-year prison sentence. This was substantially lower than it could have been had he not decided to turn against his own gang. Known as a bad-boy of rap, the young star gained fame for his careless attitude and fearless style which came out in his rap lyrics. But if you search someone online like Tekashi, you’ll find a trail of lies and lawsuits.
A Troubled Past
When Tekashi was arrested for racketeering and other charges in 2019, he was no stranger to the legal system. His previous offenses included attempted murder, assault, and many other misdemeanors such as driving with a suspended license. He even received 4-years probation for appearing in a sex video with an underage girl. However, his fearless reputation fell apart when he was arrested for gang-related violence in New York.
In July 2018, Tekashi 6ix9ine was kidnapped, robbed, and beaten by gang members which left him unconscious in the hospital. According to reports of the court case, Tekashi was sure members from his own gang were responsible for the kidnapping. Months later, while the Nine Trey Bloods gang illegally filmed a music video in the courtyard of Smurf Village, shots started firing. Tekashi didn’t need to search someone online to figure out that members from his own gang had kidnapped him, and he gave the order to shoot them.
Caught in the Crossfire
One woman who was caught in the crossfire sued Tekashi for $150 million in damages. The woman identifies simply as Jane Doe and said she was hit in her foot with a stray bullet which caused her to fall. The impact also hurt her knees and back and she ended up in the hospital for therapy and psychological treatment. The injury also caused her to forfeit her place in the New York City Police Academy while she recovered.
In another lawsuit, California-based clothing brand Fashion Nova Inc. sued the rapper for $2.2 million for breach of contract. Apparently, the company paid Tekashi $225,000 in advance to promote their fashion brand on Instagram. He took the money but never mentioned their name, which caused the company to assume he was only deceiving them. According to Fashion Nova, “the sly deceit and sharp tactics were principally led by MTA defendants, however, each defendant played an equally deceitful role in the conspiracy to defraud Fashion Nova.”
“SnitchNine”
The case in which he testified against the Nine Trey Bloods gang also marked him as a snitch. He gave the prosecution valuable information about the gang in exchange for a lighter sentence. This information included two famous rappers’ affiliation with the gang: Jim Jones and Cardi B. His fans weren’t too happy about it and memes started popping up on social media making fun of the young rapper.
If you want to find the definition of a snitch nowadays, simply search someone online by the name of Tekashi. This is one case of an extraordinary rise to fame followed by a sharp decline. Although, there’s no doubt that Tekashi’s life is at risk since gangs don’t take well to snitchers.
