Fred Cary is a well-known figure in the spheres of business, investment, and leadership. He has worn many hats throughout his career. A self-proclaimed “taco slinger,” Cary has run dozens of restaurants. He has built companies from scratch and led businesses to making billions of dollars in value crestion. At 70 years old, Cary has a lifetime of achievements and a legacy to leave behind, and he’s got no intention of slowing down. He attributes his success to two main things: his winning mindset and his healthy daily routine.
“Having a routine is very important, especially if you’re a busy entrepreneur. There are always fires to put out or opportunities to jump on, so you always need to be at the top of your game,” he explains. To achieve this, Fred has a solid routine that he follows day after day. He wakes up at 5 AM sharp, and the first minutes of his day are spent doing meditation and positive affirmations. Those are powerful psychological techniques to wire one’s brain for success and to minimize self-doubt.
Cary bets on gratitude for positive affirmation. “I look in the mirror and I state three things I’m grateful for today, or sometimes even more,” he says. Fred then works out with his trainer for anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes each morning. Physical activity is proven to contribute not only to a healthy physique but to thriving mental health as well.
When it comes to blending his personal life and his work, Cary admits that the line between the two is often blurred. “To be completely honest, I’m not the best at having boundaries between my personal and professional life. I have two goals on my bucket list: to get a day off and to get a paycheck,” he laughs. And, as far as retirement, he has set a timeline – “i expect I’ll retire around 90.”
“I fully believe that it’s crucial to allocate time off for yourself. Even when you have big goals to achieve, you need to rest. Even if I don’t take a full day off, I’m trying to relax for a couple of hours each morning or do something that is not connected with my work. You need to be able to tick off your three ‘R’s.’ Those are recharge, rethink, and regenerate,” Carry elaborates.
Having time away from one’s business allows an entrepreneur to clear their mind and to allow fresh ideas to come through. “Being able to sit back and rethink all that you do will give you perspective. Sometimes when we’re too focused on a single task, we zero in on it and forget about everything else. And if we have a problem, sometimes the solution is so close within our reach but we can’t see it because we need to remove ourselves from the work for a time,” he says.
