The Royal Canadian Mint has launched the ‘Liberation of the Netherlands’ coin in honor of 75 Years of Freedom. Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Henk van der Zwan, struck the first coin in the presence of CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, Marie Lemay, and Canadian Major-General, LaLumiere. This coin commemorates the sacrifice of Canada’s veterans. It celebrates the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.
On the occasion Ambassador Henk van der Zwan. said that this particular commemorative coin demonstrates the deep friendship between Canada and the Netherlands. He said everyone is proud that the Royal Canadian Mint decided to pay tribute to all Canadians who bravely fought for their freedom and he feels that this a beautiful tribute to a year that is full of celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. The people of the Netherlands will be forever grateful to the gesture.
The collectible is available to the public. The Royal Canadian Mint Coins for sale are a part of the special collection ‘Second World War Battlefront Series’. The scene on the reverse of the coin is illustrated by artist Pandora Young. It illustrates the emotion of people who are rediscovering their long-lost freedom.
During that time the 1st Canadian Army led a nine-month campaign. People feel gratitude towards them who fought for all and suffered personal loss. The scene depicts a Canadian soldier surrounded by children as his tank parades down the street of a typical Dutch city center and one child offering the soldier a tulip thanking him for his services.
The gesture is annually repeated by the Kingdom of the Netherlands since the end of the Second World War. Thousands of tulips bloom in Ottawa as a living symbol of the unbreakable friendship between Canada and the Netherlands.
