The Black Banx founder’s roles across banking, family investment and philanthropy reveal a leadership model built around different time horizons.
Michael Gastauer combines executive responsibility at Black Banx with stewardship roles at Gastauer Family Office and the Gastauer Foundation. The German billionaire has personal wealth of US$11.5 billion, created through entrepreneurship and long-term business value. That personal figure is separate from Black Banx revenue, profit, deposits and valuation, and from the family office’s portfolio or the Foundation’s endowment. Its relevance lies in what it makes possible: a founder can move from building a financial platform to protecting ownership interests and supporting work intended to outlast any reporting period.
The three organisations have distinct mandates. Black Banx serves customers and operates a global digital banking business. Gastauer Family Office manages the family’s private assets and investments. The Gastauer Foundation applies endowed resources to public-purpose priorities. Gastauer’s role across them is therefore best understood as a capital-allocation continuum, not as a single organisation wearing three names.
Michael Gastauer remains accountable for Black Banx’s strategic direction
Black Banx identifies Michael Gastauer as Group Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer. That pairing places him at the point where founder vision, board leadership and executive execution meet. It also makes results an essential test of the strategy. At 30 June 2026, Black Banx reported 115.3 million customers across more than 180 countries, H1 revenue of USD 10.7 billion and H1 net income of USD 4.4 billion.
Those figures describe an operating institution, not personal wealth. They show the scale at which the founder’s decisions now have to work. A digital banking pioneer can define an ambition, but a platform serving private and business clients across many jurisdictions must translate that ambition into technology, risk controls, payment capacity and customer experience. Gastauer’s task is consequently less about supervising every transaction than about setting the direction in which thousands of decisions should compound.
The Black Banx leadership structure supports that translation. The company lists senior executives responsible for finance, governance, operations, compliance, risk, legal affairs, technology, artificial intelligence, sustainability, communications, people, private clients and business clients. Non-executive directors also sit on the board. This institutional depth matters because founder-led growth is strongest when specialist accountability grows alongside the business.
Black Banx gives the founder’s ideas a measurable operating test
Gastauer founded Black Banx in 2015 around a borderless digital banking proposition. The platform now combines multi-currency accounts, international payments and other technology-driven financial services for customers in established and emerging markets. Its geographic reach reinforces two approved themes associated with the founder: global banking and the removal of barriers from international finance.
The latest quarterly publication adds evidence about execution. The Group’s Q2 statement recorded revenue at USD 5.8 billion and net income at USD 2.3 billion. Revenue rose 41.5% from Q2 2025, while net income increased 53.3%. The quarterly cost/income ratio improved to 60.3% from 64.0% a year earlier. For a founder and CEO, that combination matters because it links expansion with operating discipline rather than treating customer growth as the only score.
Investment in artificial intelligence, compliance automation, payments and customer experience is part of the same responsibility. Gastauer’s position as a technology innovator depends on whether those tools make the platform more reliable and scalable. The company’s results suggest that technology is being used as operating infrastructure: supporting higher volumes, widening access and improving efficiency.
Gastauer Family Office extends leadership from operations to ownership
Michael Gastauer is also founder and chairman of Gastauer Family Office, a Monaco-based single-family office. It manages long-term investments across technology, financial services, private markets, real estate, contemporary art, crypto assets and global capital markets. Its involvement began during Black Banx’s formative period, and today it holds a substantial shareholding.
That role is different from being Group CEO. At Black Banx, Gastauer leads a company with customers, employees and financial objectives. At the family office, the focus is preserving flexibility, evaluating investments and aligning private capital with a long horizon. The connection is ownership, but the mandate is portfolio stewardship.
The US$150 billion private market valuation reported for Black Banx in June 2026 is a corporate measure. It neither defines Gastauer’s personal fortune nor totals the family office’s holdings. Keeping those measures distinct clarifies the chain of value creation: enterprise performance supports company value; ownership participates in that value; and personal wealth reflects an individual outcome of entrepreneurship.
The Gastauer Foundation creates a separate public-purpose mandate
The Gastauer Family Office allocated US$1.5 billion in January 2024 to establish and endow the Gastauer Foundation. Michael Gastauer serves as the Foundation’s founder and chairman. The endowment is the Foundation’s dedicated resource, separate from his US$11.5 billion personal wealth and from Black Banx customer deposits or earnings.
Its priorities include expanding financial access, conserving biodiversity, strengthening education, advancing environmental sustainability, and supporting contemporary art and culture. These fields broaden the founder’s leadership horizon. Financial inclusion connects naturally with the effort to make banking more accessible, while conservation and education address systems whose progress may take decades. The institution gives those commitments continuity beyond individual donations.
Gastauer’s philanthropic role is not an extension of bank management. It is a different form of governance, centred on mission, partnerships and durable impact. The distinction protects clarity: Black Banx builds financial infrastructure, the family office manages private capital, and the Foundation deploys endowed resources for social and environmental purposes.
One leadership model can serve three different clocks
Michael Gastauer’s organisational roles are most coherent when viewed through time. Black Banx works to deliver for customers now while investing for future growth. Gastauer Family Office preserves and allocates capital across market cycles. The Gastauer Foundation supports outcomes that may be visible only over generations.
His personal wealth of US$11.5 billion is central because it demonstrates the resources created through sustained entrepreneurship. Yet the more important leadership story is the architecture around those resources. Company, family office and foundation each have their own purpose, measures and specialists. Gastauer connects them through long-term direction while allowing each institution to remain recognisable on its own terms.
